Beat Google Panda, Penguin And Any Other Update

Indexes and algorithms
Search engines organize data so they can retrieve
it fast. They use indexes and algorithms to do this.
Think of the indexes as being like the old card catalogs
in libraries. Each page on the internet is filed based on
different information the search engine knows about
it. The way that a search engine indexes differs from a
library card catalog is that a search engine can file the
same page in many different indexes and based off of
many different criteria.
Algorithms are the mathematical equations search
engines use to determine which pages to show. The
search engines have to do this fast to be able to compete.
The more they can understand about a page, the easier
it is for them to show it when someone does a related
search. That is the core of what drives all SEO, help
the search engine understand your content.
There are two distinct categories that you have to split
your SEO efforts into, Onpage and OffPage.

Onpage SEO
Search engines look at the content on your site and
on your individual pages to determine what they are
about. The things you do to your site to help the search
engines are known as onpage SEO. In this section
we will look at the things the search engines look at
on your site and how you can optimize them to rank
higher in the search results.
Keywords
All of your SEO should be designed around keywords.
Keywords are the words that you want to rank for.
They are words that are directly related to your content.
They are the main topic and subtopics of your content.
It is best to target each page to a specific keyword or
keyword phrase.
I use the Google Keyword tool to locate keywords to
target. It is best to make a Google Adwords account
before you start. You don’t have to make an account,
but it gives you access to more results if you have
one.
Steps to find keywords
1. Login to Google Adwords tool (if you don’t have an
account then just search for Google Keyword Tool
and click on the link. It will take you directly to the
keyword tool. You will have to complete captcha’s
every time you submit a keyword search).
2. Click on the Tools and Analysis menu and then
click on Keyword Tool.
3. The first thing you want to do is uncheck Broad
under Match Types on the left side of the screen. Then
check Exact under Match Types. The reason for doing this is exact shows you the exact number of searches
done per month for the particular keywords you search.
Broad shows you all of the search volume that is done
per month that relate to the particular keyword.
4. Put your keywords in the Search Box. The
search box is below Find keywords.
5. The default setting for country is the United
States. If you are targeting another country, you will
want to change this to your target country.
6. Click Search
There are a few things you should look at when you are
analyzing the results to determine keywords that you
want to potentially target. Unless your site is targeting
a global market, you will want to focus on the local
monthly searches. This column should be present
by default, but if it is not you can add it by clicking
the Columns button on the right and checking local
monthly searches. Any of the fields you see here can
be added to the table.
Some people like to talk about targeting high search
volume keywords. While I believe that it would be
good to rank for high search volume keywords, it takes
a lot of work and there is no guarantee you will stay in
those positions. The approach that has worked well for
me is to target keywords that have a monthly search
volume of 2000 or less. This usually gives you a wide
variety of keywords that you can target without so
much competition that it will take you months of work
and possibly years to see results. The other reason for
choosing keywords with sub 2000 searches is that you
generally will be more targeted to what the searcher is
looking for.
If you do a search on the word games, you will see
there are about 3.3 million searches done in the United
States each month. If you have a duck shooting game you could try to compete for the keyword games. The
problem is it would take a lot of work to get to the top
of the search results for games and the traffic would not
be targeted to your game. Instead, if you do a keyword
search for duck shooting game, you will see that there
are 390 searches. This is highly targeted traffic and
because it is a low search volume, it usually is easier
to rank for.
There are some cases where it will be hard to rank for
a term no matter how much the search volume. This
is in very high competition markets that have a high
rate of return for who ever ranks for those keywords.
An example of this would be a search for compare car
insurance plans. This keyword phrase gets less than
10 searches per month, but the competition is so high
that it would be pointless to target it.
Once you have chosen the keywords you want to
target you can move on with your SEO efforts. A good
number of keywords to start with is 4 - 5. This will be
enough to get you going and will not be too much to
manage.
Title
The title is one of the most important factors in your
onpage SEO, the other is the URL. We will discuss
the URL in the next section. The title, I believe, is
one of the first things search engines consider when
determining whether or not to show your page. The
title is basically your way of telling the search engines
what your page is about. If there were no other factors
involved and you had two pages about football; one
titled “A Fierce Battle Between Warriors”, and the other
titled “Football: The Game, Its History, and Its Fans”,
and you did a search for the history of football, which
page would be a match? The second one because it has the words in the title.
The order of the words is not that important in the
title. You should include as many relevant words as
you would like. If you have a title like “Fishing For
Young People In Orlando Florida In Summer,” you
could potentially rank for fishing in Orlando, young
people fishing in Orlando, Florida fishing for young
people, and a host of other searches. These are what
are known as long tail searches. We will talk more
about long tail searches in its own section.
The last thing to think about when creating your title is
to make sure it makes sense to the reader. Don’t throw
a bunch of words together just so you can try and rank
for multiple searches. Although you might show up in
many searches, searchers will ignore your link because
it will look like untargeted garbage.
The title should be placed on your page, preferably in
a h1 html tag and in the head of the html document
inside the title tags. It will look something like this:

Your title goes here

Your title goes here

If you are using a blog or cms software like Wordpress,
then it will take care of this for you. Just put your title
in the title field of your post or page. URL
The URL is the other page element that tops the list
of onpage seo factors. URL stands for Universal
Resource Locator. It is the address that is assigned to
your page to locate it on the internet. It is also the
address that appears in the address bar of your browser.
Search engines have to save this address to be able to
find your page.
It has been proven through studies that the URL plays
a role in how search engines determine which pages
to show in their results. Do a bunch of searches on
Google and you will notice that many of the results
include the search terms in the URL. Research has
also shown that it is better to have a short URL instead
of a long URL. This means you should target your
main keyword phrase in the URL and not a bunch of
other long tail words.
You should also use search engine friendly URLs.
Below is an example of an unfriendly URL and a
friendly URL.
Unfriendly to search engines
www.yoursite.com/yourpage?title=some%20keywords
Friendly to search engines
www.yoursite.com/some-keywords
The unfriendly URL has a bunch of symbols that
browsers use to determine what to do with the
information contained in the URL, but it is confusing
to the search engines. The friendly URL gets rid of
all of the symbols and just gives the search engine
the keywords for the page. We use hyphens because
spaces produce the symbol ‘%20’. Depending on which way your system is setup, your
URL could be created in different ways. You should
seek documentation for your particular setup to create
search engine friendly URLs.
Meta Description
The meta description is the description that search
engines show under the link to your page in their search
results. This description also plays a part in how the
search engines rank your pages. Include your main
keyword phrase somewhere in the first 140 characters.
If you do not include a meta description, the search
engines will use the first part of your page for the
description.
The meta description appears in the head of the html
code of your page. It looks like this,

<meta name=”description” content=”This is where
you want to put your description with keywords” />
Keyword density and related keywords
The next area you need to focus on is your content.
First and foremost, your content should be written for
your readers. If you have done your work ahead of
time and chosen good topics to write about, that your
audience will be searching for, then the natural process
of writing should help you to place related keywords
into your content without really thinking about those
words.
There is a belief that you should repeat your keyword
a certain amount of time throughout your content to
rank higher. This used to work, but seems to be less effective these days. A better approach is to have many
related keyword in your content. The idea is the title
and url will contain the main keywords, the content
also will contain the main keywords, but in natural
writing, it will contain many related words. Search
engines, particularly Google, want to index content that
seems natural because they believe this is an indicator
of good content.
With all of that said, once you have written your
content, you can go through it and analyze it. You can
then replace some of the words with related words that
you find in the Google keyword tool. These words will
show up when you search your main keyword phrase.
The reason you want to do this is because Google is
basically telling you the words they associate with your
main keywords. If you sort the results of the keyword
tool by relevancy, you can assume that the first word is
the most relevant, the second word is the second most
relevant, and so on. This will help you rank for your
main keywords, as well as, long tail keywords.
Internal links
Links on your site linking to other pages on your site are
called internal links. These links serve two purposes.
The first is to guide your users around so they can
find relevant content. They also help search engines
find your pages and index them. For SEO purposes,
you should link to your own content from within your
content often.
To get the most benefit, you want to use in context
keyword rich anchor text and you should vary it on
different links to the same page. If you have a page
about the best way to feed dogs and you want to link
to it from other pages on your site you would do the
following: Page 1 text
We love to walk our dog. Dogs are best feed after they
take a walk.
Page 2 text
When a dog eats right before bed, it sleeps better.
The underlined text in each sample would be good
anchor text for your links.
Actions to Take
For each of your pages make sure you are focusing on
one topic that is clearly defined by your keywords.
Analyze your titles and include your keywords, as well
as, other related words.
Your URL should be search engine friendly; hyphenate
your keywords and keep it short.
Write a meta description for each page using your
keywords and related words
Include your keywords in the text of your articles where
appropriate and use related words as much as possible
Link content on your site to other content on your site;
use diverse anchor text that relates to your keywords.

Offpage SEO
The importance of external links
The single greatest ranking factor for any web page is
the external links that are linking to it. Search engines
look at the sites that are pointing to your web pages
and how they are linking to you. The number of links,
the anchor text used in the links, and the authority of
the sites pointing to your site, all play a role in how
your site is ranked in the search engines for different
keywords.
Trustrank vs. Pagerank
When the founders of Google first created their search
engines, they based it off of an authority model that
was described in their college term paper and named
Pagerank. It seems that Pagerank played a very
important role in the way Google interpreted its data
and ultimately returned search results in the past. It has
been accepted by most in the SEO world that Pagerank
does not correlate to Google’s search results today.
Many believe, as well as I, that there exist a factor
called Trustrank. This Trustrank is based on authority,
reputation, and trust. According to Google, it is a
determination of whether a general user, seeing the
page, would consider it to be a good page and whether
the site is about the topic that was searched. Sites that
perform well in these areas get a higher score. Links
pointing to your site pass some of the Trustrank to
your pages. If a page receives Trustrank from one site
and then links to a page on another site, some of the
Trustrank will be passed to the page it links to, but it
will be less than what has been passed to it.

We use this knowledge to help us choose which links
we should go after.
A framework for external link building
To rank my pages in Google I use a particular offpage
framework that has kept my pages ranking high in the
search results. The following is an overview and will
be detailed below.
1. Create at least 10 dofollow blog comments using
Commentluv blogs for each page
2. Create and publish at least one article for each page
on a high trusted site and link to a page on the your
site
3. Create and publish at least two articles for each
article in step two and link them to that article
Tools to evaluate links
To understand the value of the sites you are seeking
and the links you are going to build, you need to have
a few tools installed. There are two tools that I use
for evaluating sites and the links on the sites. Both of
these tools are available as plugins in the FireFox and
Chrome browsers.
The first tool is the Seomoz toolbar. It has many
features available to help you with your online research
and marketing. Some of the features are free and some
are paid. The part of the plugin we are going to use is
free.
Steps to install the mozbar
1. Go to the install plugins menu for firefox or
chrome
2. Search mozbar
3. Click install
4. Restart the browser
Once you have installed the mozbar you will see it appear
under the browser’s address bar. If you search Google
for any term you will see the mozbar results appear
under each result. There are two pieces of information
we are interested in, Domain Authority (DA) and
Page Authority (PA). DA and PA are both measured
on a scale from 0 to 100 and are a measurement of
the authority of the site domain and page according to
Seomoz’s search; which has been designed to match
Google’s search.
The second tool we are going to use is the NoDoFollow
browser plugin.
Steps to install NoDofollow plugin
1. Go to the install plugin menu of firefox or chrome
2. Search NoDoFollow
3. Click install
4. Restart the browser
Looking at the competition
I am going to use two keyword phrases to illustrate
a process that I use to figure out if a keyword phrase
is one that I can rank for and how much work it will
take. The two phrases are wireless alarm system and
apartment alarm system. You need to have the mozbar
from seomoz.org installed to do this method. It is a
free addon for the firefox and chrome browsers. You
don’t need it installed to follow along. I will provide
screenshots along the way.

The Steps and Tools
The first thing that I do when I have identified a potential keyword to target is to do a search in Google
without being logged into Google. The mozbar places
stats under each of the results returned by Google. I
first quickly glance to see the domain authority (DA)
of each of the results. If they are all very low, under
30, I already know that I have a very good chance of
ranking, but I still am not sure of the effort. If they
are all 60 or higher, my initial feelings will be that it
could be a little tough to rank. From this data, so far,
we cannot really determine anything. Don’t let these
initial number scare you or make you over zealous.
The next thing I look at is the page authority of each
of the results. This number is what the moz algorithm
has assigned as the value, on a scale of 0 – 100, of the
the page itself. You also will see how many links are
linking to each of the pages next to the PA score. The
number of links does not mean that there are that many
different websites linking into the page. It is possible
that the website in which the page resides is linking to
itself from many internal links. It also is possible that
a few external websites are linking from many of their
own pages.
It is best to click on a link in the search results and visit
the page. Once you are on the page, you can click on
the Use moz tools icon on the moz toolbar (it is the little
wrench), and then navigate down to Links>SEOmoz
Link Analysis. This will show you the top pages
linking into the page you are researching. The link
anchor text, page authority, and domain authority of
the site linking in is very important here. If the page
has the exact match phrase linking in and the page
authority and domain authority are good, then they are
getting a fair amount of juice for the key phrase. The
more they have linked in with the this right formula,
the better it is for them that they will either maintain
their position or move up in the rankings.

You want to be able to match their efforts or do better
than them if you are going to compete. Obviously, you
are looking for words that have the least amount of
stuff working for your competitors that you can target.
If every result on the Google search page has a high
domain authority, a medium to high page authority,
and have a bunch of links with the exact match, you
know that it will take a lot of effort.
The other point that I look at, if I have decided to go
further, is the age of the site and the age of the page.
You can find out when a domain was first registered by
doing a whois lookup. This will not tell you how long
there has been a site on the domain, but will only tell
you how long the site has been registered. To get a feel
for how old the site is, and more importantly, how old
the page is, I look at the page in archive.org.
Go back up to the mozbar and click on the Use moz
tools icon. Navigate to Domain Tools>archive.org.
This will take you to the first chronilogical entry that
archive.org has for that page. If there is no entry, the
next best thing is to see what it has for the site you
are researching. You can use this data to compare the
dates when each of the pages were put up.
This is important in your analysis because as you are
looking at the data on the search results, you may think
that a page lower in the search results should beat a page
that is above it. The age of the page is a determining
factor in the search algorithm. The lower page if
young, and it has more going for it, will probably beat
the higher, older page given more time.
The Process in Action
Let’s look at the first keyword phrase, wireless alarm systems. The first thing I notice in this search is that
all of the results are on domains with medium to high
domain authority. The second thing I notice is that
all of the results have a greater than 50 page authority
with all of them except for one, which is Amazon.com,
having many links. This tells me that it would be a lot
of work and time to rank for wireless alarm system.
There are many other factors that are unique to each
business that would determine if you would want to go
after this phrase, but it is not one anyone could bank
on for the foreseeable future. It is not a phrase that I
would go after.
The second phrase, apartment alarm system, is a little
more interesting. Looking at the search results we can
see that seven of the ten results have a domain authority
of less than 50. We can also see that four of them have
a low page authority and low domain authority. These
are the ones that interest us. This tells us that sites
that are not that significant can rank for the key phrase,
apartment alarm system.
For me, most of the time, this would be enough to
say that I could rank for this phrase with a little bit of
work. But there is something else that is interesting,
that can help us to understand how Google ranks
sites. At the time of this writing, as you can see in
the screenshot, lasershielddirect.com outranks
apartmentalarmsystems.net and both of them outrank
aparmentalarmsystem.net (doesn’t have the “s” on
system), even though it has a higher domain and page
authority.
If we go to archive.org, we can see that lasershielddirect.
com is much older than both of the other sites, but its page
about apartment alarm systems is only a few months
older than the page from apartmentalarmsystems.net
and the page from apartmentalarmsystem.net is the

oldest by several months. This, coupled with the link
data, can give us some good insight into how Google
ranks.
The page from lasershielddirect.com has one high
domain authority site linking into it with the exact
match phrase. It also has overall site age from 2008
going for it. The site, apartmentalarmsystems.
com has several domains linking in using the exact
match keyword phrase. It also has a medium domain
authority site pointing to it with the exact match name,
apartmentalarmsystem.net. Yes, that is correct, the site
below the other two is pointing to it. I could not verify
if they were owned by the same person, but I suspect
they are. Also, apartmentalarmsystem.net seems to
not have any important domains pointing to it with the
keyword phrase.
My prediction, if everything stays the same, is
that aparmentalarmsystems.net will out rank
lasershielddirect.com in the near future. I also believe
that there is plenty of room to compete for a spot on the
first page of Google for this keyword phrase without a
lot of effort, and with 210 searches being done every
month in the US, it is a phrase that I would target if I
were in the alarm system niche.
Blog Commenting
Blog commenting is one of the first things I do when
I put up a new site or new pages. Many overlook the
power of blog commenting for SEO benefits.
Step 1 Search for CommentLuv blogs
The easiest way to find CommentLuv blogs is to search
for them with Google.

commentluv “your keywords”
So, if you had a website about tennis and you had
an article about tennis balls, you would search as
follows:
commentluv “tennis balls”
You should try different various of your phrase and
even words that are related to your keywords. This
will give you more blogs to choose from.
There is one other thing you may want to include in
the search:
-enabled
I include -enabled in my searches because some of
the blogs that use commentluv have the premium
version installed. If they did not pay for an upgrade,
then the plugin doesn’t work. I found that in every
case that I encountered the broken plugin, the phrase
“commentluv enabled” was on the page. So, if you do
a search with -enabled, you will get results that do not
have “enabled” on it.
Turn off images
To make this process go faster. I turn off image loading
in my browser.
Step 2 - Identify if a blog is worth commenting on
DA and PA
If you have not already done so, you should install the
mozbar and the nodofollow plugins discussed earlier.

Once you have done a search you will see the mozbar
results under each of the search results. The DA and
PA are what we are interested in. The DA tells us the
domain’s authority. This indicates the amount of trust
the domain has and that can possibly be passed to
any site that is linked to from it. The PA is the page’s
authority. This is the amount of trust the page has. I
use these numbers only to pick which sites I am going
to comment on when there is a large selection.
If I have a lot of sites to choose from and a limited
amount of time to do link building, I will try to get the
links with the highest DA and PA as possible.
Once you have decided to follow a link from the search
results, you can do a few things to make a determination
if you want to comment or not.
How old is the post?
You don’t necessarily want to make your decision
to post a comment based on the age of the site. The
thing you want to think about, if a post is very old,
is does the blog owner continue to take care of the
blog and approve comments. One of the things about
blog commenting is you don’t know if the comments
are moderated or not. When first encountering a new
blog, the best thing is to assume the comments are
moderated. If it appears that the blog in not being
taken care of, then you should move on to the next blog
without comment.
Step 3 - Make the comment
Quality, relevant comment
Everything you do on the web should be quality,
especially the comments you make on other people’s websites. The comments should also be relevant to
the blog post. Read or skim the post and make sure
you understand what the post is about. Then write a
comment that shows you have read the post and have
something insightful to include in the conversation.
Use real information
Use your real name or a pen name for the name field,
just be consistent. Put a real email address that you
own in the email address field. Some blog owners will
contact you using this email address. I have never been
spammed by a blogger when I left my email address in
one of their comment forms.
Follow the rules
Read the rules the blog owner has set out for
commenting. If there are no rules clearly spelled out,
then there are two general rules you should follow.
First, if a blog owner has not expressed that they want
you to use keywords in the name field, do not use them;
no matter what. Second, don’t make links to other
websites unless it is to add value to the comment.
KeywordLuv plus
In addition to the CommentLuv plugin giving a
link back to one of your blog post, some blogs have
KeywordLuv installed as well. KeywordLuv allows
you to put three keywords in the name field of the
comment form along with your name. The format is as
follows (make sure there are no spaces between the @
and the words that butt up against it.
Your name@Your Keywords here

Step 4
Track
Spreadsheet
Create a spreadsheet that tracks several variables; url,
moderated, dofollow/nofollow, date of comment, live
on page. These metrics will allow you to go back and
check the links later if they are moderated. It will also
give you one place to view all of the links you have
built. You will need this for your records. No link
tracking tool will show you all of them, but because
you are finding these blog post through Google you
can be sure that the search engines see these links.
Build a master list for future links
Another advantage of tracking your Commentluv link
building campaigns is that you can build a master list
for creating future links. You can quickly see which
blogs are dofollow and not moderated if you need to
get some links fast.
Step 5
Advance steps to diversify links
Additional rss feed
Commentluv works by reading the last post you made
on your blogs rss feed. This means you can’t select a
different post from your content if you want to. If you
make a secondary rss feed you can control which blog
post shows up when you comment without messing
with your blogs regular rss feed. This also allows you
to change the title of the post that shows up on the blog
when you comment. The format looks like this:

Moving Across Country

Moving Across Country

18 Passenger Van Rental

18 Passenger Van Rental

Copy the above code and save it in a file called feed.
rss. Change the settings to match your site and the blog
post you want to target. Upload the file to a directory
on your site. When you comment on a CommentLuv
enabled site, instead of putting your sites URL in the
website filled of the comment form, put http://www.
yoursite.com/directory-path-to-secondary-rss/feed.rss
Diversify titles for different keywords to same post
As discussed earlier, you need to diversify the keyword
phrases that are used in the anchor text that is used in
the links pointing to your pages. Using the additional
rss feed with CommentLuv enabled sites, you have the
opportunity to use whatever title you want. This title
becomes the anchor text that the CommentLuv uses
when it generates the link to your site. Look at the
related words in the Google Keyword Tool for your

main keyword and change up your title as you are
building links.
Link wheels
A link wheel is very simple to understand. You link
sites to your main site. Some of those sites also link
to each other, but your site never links to them and
generally no two sites reciprocate links. If site A links
to site B, then site B doesn’t link to site A. This is a
single tier link wheel. If you then link sites to the first
set of sites that are linking to you, you have a two tier
link wheel. These second tier sites can link to each
other if you like, just remember that part of the trust
will be passed to whatever a link is linking to.

Most developers use web 2.0 sites and article directories
to build a link wheel. Some of the best web 2.0 sites
to use are wordpress.com, tumblr.com, squidoo.com,
wix.com and other high trusted sites. Some of the best
article directories are ezinearticles.com, goarticles.
com, amazines.com, and other top article directories.
Please see the list provided with this course for more
web 2.0 sites and article directories.

What to do with the link wheel
I think this is where many people get confused. They
understand the basic concept, but don’t know where
to apply it. I was the same way when I first came into
contact with the link wheel strategy. The link wheel is
designed to build authority around your site. First, you
should use sites that have high trust rank to build your
link wheel. This is because these sites have the ability
to rank for keywords easier than most sites.
If you target your keywords on the first tier of the link
wheel and then point all of those sites to your site, you
are effectively surrounding yourself with that keyword.
Search engines see this and follow it, believing your
page is about what all of these pages that are pointing
into it are about. Additionally, by placing your
keywords as the anchor text for the link, the websites
further believes that your page is about whatever
keywords you have targeted. When the search engine
gets to your page and sees that your page is indeed
about the topic of your keywords, it indexes with your
keywords. Then, if the first tier sites also have high
trusted sites linking to the pages that are linking to you
and those pages are about your keyword, more trust
is passed to the pages linking to your page and then,
subsequently, passed to you.
A basic concept we have to understand is, high trusted
links carry more weight than lower trusted links,
especially when the linking pages are themselves
trusted for the keywords you are targeting. What this
means is less links are needed if high trust sites link to
your site and then high trust rank sites link to the sites
linking to you. Some people feel that it is not necessary
to link some of the first tier sites to each other, or for
that matter, second tier sites to each other. I do not

know if it is necessary. I have seen people doing well
with both, including myself.
The final step is to link some sites to the second tier;
creating a third tier. Many people like to blast the
second tier sites with many links from lower trusted
sites, but I believe you can follow the same process as
you have with the first two tiers and link to the second
tier with other high trustrank sites. The key is to put up
good content on all of the sites.
If you only build one tier and do not link anything to
that tier, the results will not be as good as building a
second tier and linking to the first tier. The same is true
if you do not build the third tier and link to the second
tier.
Link wheels are good for your business. They are a
form of advertising. They allow you to associate your
brand, and specifically, your optimized page, with high
trust sites.
Article Directories
Article directories are good places to get links. Not
all article directories have high trustrank. Below is a
list of high trustrank article directories. Use these in
building direct links to your site, as well as, links to
other pages in your link wheel if you decide to employ
that method.

Other Strategies
Long Tail keywords
Long tail keyword searches are searches that a re
performed by a smaller amount of people. These
kinds of searches are said to make up 25% - 50% of
all searches. Because there are so many different long
tail searches, there are plenty that have little to no
competition.
Long tail keywords can bring you a lot of traffic without
much link building. You can get long tail keyword
traffic by including multiple related keywords in your
content. This will help you to rank for many searches
that deal with the subject of your content.
One way to increase your long tail search rankings is
to have more content. You can write and post content
more often, and you can make your post longer. Longer
post can be seen as rich content by search engines and
that can help to boost your overall rankings.
You can also write post that target long tail keywords as the main topic. You can find long tail keywords by
using the Google Keyword Tool described earlier.
You can also use Yahoo Answers to search your subject
and find topics by looking at the questions people are
asking. If you do an advanced search you can limit your
search by category, number of answers, date, and other
fields. You can then take the titles of the questions and
use portions of them to target long tail searches.
Social networks
Search engines are now using social signals in
determining how your content will rank in the search
results. The thinking is, the more your content is
shared, the more important it is. There are many
different networks out there that you can use. The ones
that most people have had success with are Facebook
and Twitter. You don’t have to do both of them, but the
more you do the better your results will be.
Facebook for SEO
1. Create an account and friend influential people in
your niche. Many of them will not accept your request,
but some of them should. Remember, it is not about
numbers, but about quality.
2. Start posting stuff about your niche on your wall.
Create short post and try to figure out when your
audience is using the site.
3. Look for other people that are interested in your
niche. Friend them and accept their friend request.
4. Comment on your friend’s walls and like messages in your feed.
5. Begin to ask thought provoking questions on your
wall. This will give your audience the opportunity to
engage with you.
6. Continue to seek out friends and accept friend
request. After ten days or so, you can start to up the
posting of your own content. Try to keep it at about
30%. Keep this pattern going and you will start to see
traffic to your site from Facebook, as well as, you will
reap the SEO benefits from the search engines.
Twitter SEO
1. Create an account and add your picture or logo for
your profile image. Also, set your website address.
2. Start following influential people in your niche.
Also, look for individuals that fit into your target
audience.
3. Follow 100 - 200 people a day, you can do this
manually or use a program like Tweet Adder to
automate the process.
4. Tweet other’s blog post and content that is about
your niche. Also, retweet other tweets. Only include
your content about 10% of the time.
4. Only 20% - 30% will follow back. If someone has
not followed you back after 2 - 3 days, then unfollow
them. You can use a website like justunfollow.com
to see who is following you back or if you are using
Tweet Adder it will do it for you.
5. After a week or so, you can up your tweets to contain
20% of your own content.

6. Continue this pattern and others will start sharing
your content and the search engines will notice.
Actions To Take
Look for long tail keywords using the Google keyword
tool, Yahoo Answers, and your competitors sites. Be
sure to include long tail keywords in your articles and
create some articles on your site that specifically target
long tail keywords
Setup accounts on Facebook and Twitter and start
following others in your niche. Share other’s content
and slowly introduce your own, keeping it at no more
that 30% of everything you share.
Chapter 4
Tracking your progress
Analytics and Webmaster Tools
You need to be able to track your progress in the
search engines. Google provides two tools to keep
track of your progress, Google Analytics and Google
Webmaster Tools.
Analytics records the clicks that are made when
someone comes to your site. It will show you what the
source site is that sent the traffic. It will also show you
the landing page, the path the traffic followed through
your site, and where they exited. It will also show you
how much time was spent on your site, the number of
visitors, and the number of pages per visitor. There is a
wealth of information that is provided about the activity

that happens on your site when someone visits.
Google Webmaster Tools shows you many of the links
that Google has found that are pointing at your site. It
also shows you what keywords you are ranking for and
in what position you are ranking. In addition, it shows
you if the crawler has any problems when it visits your
site. Bing also has its own Webmaster Tools, but I
have not used it.
Sitemap
The sitemap is an xml document that describes the
layout of your site. It can be created with free tools
online. Once you have created the sitemap, you should
upload it to your website and then put a link to it in
the Google Webmaster tools. This will tell Google the
structure of your site and help them index it better.
Chapter 5
Other ways to get links
Guest posting
Like blog commenting, guest posting gives you
links from existing blogs. Guest posting has some
advantages and disadvantages. The disadvantages to
guest post are you have to write a unique and thought
provoking article that engages the blogs audience and
you have to spend time contacting blog owners. These
can both be very time consuming tasks to just get
one link, though I think you will see the advantages
outweigh the disadvantages and you will want to do
some guest blogging.
There are several advantages to guest blogging. First,
you will get a contextual link from the article and usually the blogger will allow this to be at the beginning of the
article which has SEO benefits. Second, many blogs
publish the latest post on the front page of the blog and
put forth much effort to promote new blog post. Third,
if you target the right kinds of blogs in your niche, you
will get instant traffic when the post goes live and you
will see traffic for years to come.
List
Making list of different things in your niche can be a
great way to get links. This is one of those techniques
that seems backwards. You first make a list then you
share it and others link back to you. There is a bit of
scientific engineering involved
One of the best types of list to make to get links back
is a round up post. Basically, you pick a topic that your
niche is interested in and then you make a list of blogs
that have something interesting to say about that topic
and include them in the list. Once you publish the
post you share it with your audience and contact each
individual blog and let them know they have made the
list. Ask them to check it out, comment, and share it
with their audience. This will, in many cases, result in
some good traffic and a few links.
Another variation of this is to pick a topic and create
a questionnaire to send to other bloggers. Some will
not bother, but some will respond. Let them know you
regard them as knowledgeable on the subject and want
their professional advice to share with your audience.
When the post goes live, notify them. They will then
share it with their audience.
Remember, the blogs don’t have to be run by the latest
guru. They just need to be bloggers that care and have
at least a small audience.

Forums
Forums have been around for a long time. They are
the original social media sites. Forums can have many
benefits; including seo benefits. When you create an
account you get a profile. Most forums allow you to
put a link to your website in your profile. These links
are not that valuable when you first create them, but
over time, as you post more, they can have an impact
on your SEO.
The other type of link that you get from a forum, and
that has an impact sooner on your SEO, is the signature
link. Most forums allow you to save a link and some
information about yourself in a signature. Whenever
you post your signature appears under your comment.
The number of times you post don’t necessarily count
as having many new links from Google’s point of
view, but do show that you are an active poster, which
has an effect on SEO. In addition, forum post appear
in search results and members find post through the
forum. When someone reads a thread and sees your
post, there is a good possibility they will click on your
link to see who you are.
Anchor text diversification - Penguin Fix
For a time, you could build links using the same
keyword phrase over and over as the anchor text for
links pointing to your site and you would see high
rankings for those words if other SEO strategies were
in place. Those days are gone. The Google algorithm
update called Penguin showed us that the words used in
links pointing to our pages matter. If you over optimize
for a particular keyword phrase by having too many
exact match phrase anchors and not enough other types of anchor text, you run the risk of having some or all of
your inbound links being devalued.
You must diversify the anchor text that is linking to
you on the links that you have control over to create
a natural anchor text profile. If your are building new
links, then plan to do this from the beginning. If you
have existing links, analyze them and see if you have a
diverse profile even if you are ranking high.
Here is a break down of how the anchor text should be
structured for any given page and your site as a whole.
You should use the exact match phrase, partial match
phrases, generic phrases (i.e. any phrases that don’t
include the target keywords), and the url as anchor text.
Exact match and generic phrases should be about 25%,
give or take 5%. Partial match phrases should make
up about 10% and links using the url to your page or
site should make up 30% - 40%. This is a suggested
structure base on samples of data pulled from sites that
held their ranking after Penguin and sites that lost their
rankings. It is by no means a guarantee, but it has had
some positive results.
Closing thoughts
SEO can take as little effort as you want to put into
it, but the results that you receive from it are directly
related to that effort. If you want to rank for more
keywords and higher in the search engines, then you
have to put forth the effort.
SEO is a process that takes a lot of time in the beginning
with many of the results delayed until later. The more
you do it the better you will understand the process
and be able to get results faster for less effort. This
is a skill that takes time to develop. Once you have
a basic understanding of SEO, if you decide that you don’t want to spend your time doing it, you can hire
someone to do it for you. The good thing is you will
understand what they are doing to rank your site and
will be able to aid them in that process.
If you haven’t already, get started and soon you will be
ranking higher in the search results. I’ll see you there.
